Keeping the Peace: Engaging Youth Gang Leaders to Prevent Violence in West Africa

A Capstone – ABIC research Project Presentation

The Capstone 01 team is a 3-member student group pursuing a Masters in International Affairs at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva. The aforementioned applied research project, in collaboration with the ABIC, aimed to study the Women’s Situation Room (WSR) to identify and review current entry points for engaging youth gangs to participate in the prevention of violent conflict during elections. The WSR involves a multitude of actors, including local women from all walks of life, eminent women, the police, the National Election Commission, politicians, and the youth, to mitigate and prevent violence before, during and after elections.

The research focused on the actors participating actively in these situation rooms, paying close attention to the involvement of youth ‘gangs’. The inclusion of youth gangs to prevent electoral violence is a completely new concept and the goal was to uncover exactly how and why it has become so successful in West Africa as this could be a model that is applied around the world.

The presentation will be done by;

– Mr. Jerome Meyer

– Ms Maria Consolata Spano

– Ms Madhumita Varma
